Khao Kheow Open Zoo experienced a remarkable surge of 12,000 visitors on September 15, eager to see Moo-Deng, the charming baby pygmy hippo. This impressive turnout far exceeded the typical weekend attendance of 4,000 to 5,000 people. The zoo, located in Si Racha, Chon Buri, reported that crowds began arriving even before opening time.
Attaporn Srirang, the Director of the Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand, noted that Moo-Deng’s popularity significantly increased visitor numbers. To manage the influx, the zoo organized viewing sessions, allowing groups to spend three to five minutes observing Moo-Deng. Guests also had the opportunity to see her older siblings, Mae Mali, Kha Moo, and Moo Toon.
Srirang advised tourists to consider weekday visits to avoid the crowds. The boost in visitors not only benefits Khao Kheow but also positively impacts other zoos across the country. For instance, Ubon Ratchathani and Khon Kaen zoos have reported rising interest in their pygmy hippos, Kaki and Duang Maprao, who are relatives of Moo-Deng.
In addition to showcasing Moo-Deng, the zoo offers engaging street shows where caretakers interact with animals, such as bathing rhinos. These initiatives aim to enhance public understanding of animal care, and Srirang plans to implement similar programs in other zoos.
Looking ahead, Khao Kheow Open Zoo will introduce a new family of sloths next month. Currently, the zoo houses one sloth, Grandfather Flash. The zoo recently acquired young sloths and hopes to facilitate breeding by potentially organizing a wedding ceremony for them.
Srirang addressed concerns about the impact of large crowds on animal stress. He assured visitors that hippos, including Moo-Deng, typically remain undisturbed in their designated areas. However, he urged everyone to refrain from throwing objects or splashing water at the animals. Such actions could lead to legal consequences, as the zoo prioritizes animal welfare and protection.
Moo-Deng’s global fame presents an excellent opportunity to showcase Thai zoos. Srirang emphasized that the zoo has focused on highlighting her cuteness rather than extensive promotional efforts, attracting significant international media attention. Artists and illustrators have been inspired to create numerous artworks featuring Moo-Deng. Nevertheless, the zoo has faced challenges, including incidents where visitors attempted to provoke her for reactions, prompting the director to issue firm warnings against such behavior.
